Day 7

Why is the study of exoplanets an important part of modern astronomy? How can it affect the careers of those interested in space? These and other questions were answered by Professor Dmitry Wiebe, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a science communicator, to participants of the Open World Astronomy Olympiad.
Dmitry Wiebe dedicated his lecture to the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the first exoplanetary system, where a planet orbits a normal star. This event in 1995 marked a new era in astronomy and significantly changed our understanding of the emergence and structure of planetary systems.
The lecturer spoke about the main features of planets beyond our Solar System and their unique characteristics. The lecture, which did not delve into complex theoretical aspects, inspired participants to study astronomy and consider building a career in this exciting field.
Today, participants from nine countries planted magnolias in the territory of the Olympic Park in Sirius. The planted magnolia bushes will symbolize new friendships and strengthen international cooperation.
"Tree planting is not only an ecological act but also an important social event. It fosters closeness among people and strengthens their connections. The great Persian poet Hafiz Sherozi brightly emphasizes this in his poems. His poems carry a powerful message about how ‘planting a tree of friendship' can fulfill the deepest desires, while 'uprooting a seedling of enmity' helps avoid misfortunes", noted participant Khuseyni Gulomzoda from Tajikistan.
The results of the Open International Astronomy Olympiad will be announced in Sirius tomorrow. You can watch the solemn closing ceremony here.
